Hot Fuzz

If you loved Shaun of the Dead then you'll love it!!
If you've not seen Shaun of the Dead then do so, then watch this; you'll love it!!
If you didn't like Shaun of the Dead then watch this; you might love it!!

A super-cop is moved from London to a small village which is famous for having the lowest crime rate in the country. He then finds a sinister plot unveiling itself leading to the death of some of the villagers. Will he be able to solve the crime?

Whereas SOTD was an homage with some comedic elements this is more a comedy with homagic (is that a word?) elements. Plenty of obvious nods to Bad Boys 2 and Point Break but lots of smaller references to the likes of Wicker Man, Shining, Straw Dogs (even SOTD gets a look in).

There are also some clever cameo appearances; who is it playing his SOCO girlfriend? Who is Santa (blink and you'll miss it).

The film was obviously written in reverse, not in Memento style but knowing what the finale would be (basically a Sergio Leone style shootout but in an English Village) and they worked it from there.

None of the performances are outstanding but then this isn't a film that's going for Oscar glory, it's a film for film fans.

The best film of the year so far. Babel being the only other film I've seen in 2007.
